CySA+ vs XSOC: Which SOC Certification Actually Proves You Can Do the Job?

Which SOC Certification Actually Proves You Can Do the Job?

There are more SOC analyst job postings right now than there are qualified people to fill them. If you are working toward a role in a Security Operations Centre, or you are already in one and trying to move up, the certification question is real and the stakes are high.

CySA+ is the market incumbent. It is on more job specifications than any other SOC-specific certification and it has CompTIA's global brand behind it. XSOC is the practitioner alternative: no multiple choice exam, mentor-assessed, six intensive days.

This comparison is honest. Both are legitimate. The right choice depends on where you are in your career and what you are actually trying to prove.

The question is not which certification looks best on your CV. The question is which one produces the capability your next employer actually needs you to have on your first week.

What CySA+ Is and What It Is Not

The CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst certification has been the de facto entry-to-mid SOC credential since its launch in 2017. It sits above Security+ in the CompTIA pathway and is widely referenced in UK, US, and EU SOC job specifications as a preferred or required qualification.

The exam consists of 165 questions, a mix of multiple choice and performance-based items, with a 165-minute time limit. It tests knowledge across five domains: security operations, vulnerability management, incident response, reporting and communication, and identity and access management. Passing requires a scaled score of 750 out of 900.

What CySA+ does well

  • Broad recognition: HR teams and hiring managers know it globally

  • Structured curriculum: Well-documented, plenty of prep materials

  • Career signposting: Sits clearly on the CompTIA pathway above Security+

  • Government alignment: DoD 8570 approved in the US, referenced in UK NCSC frameworks

What CySA+ does not do

CySA+ tests whether you can answer questions about SOC work. It does not test whether you can do SOC work. The performance-based items in the exam are scenario simulations, not real investigations with real tooling and real ambiguity. An analyst who has memorised CySA+ content and passed the exam may still struggle on their first shift when the SIEM generates 400 alerts and none of them look like the textbook examples.

This is not a criticism unique to CySA+. It applies to most certification exam formats. The gap between being able to answer a question about incident response and being able to run one under pressure is significant, and the exam does not close it.

CySA+ tells your employer you understand SOC concepts well enough to pass a standardised test. That is genuinely useful. It is also not the same as demonstrating you can do the work. Competitor pricing correct at time of publication.

What XSOC Is and What It Requires

XSOC is Xcademia's SOC Analyst Practitioner certification. Six instructor-led days. No multiple choice exam. Assessment is conducted by a senior Xcademia practitioner who has held operational SOC roles. The focus throughout is applied: real tooling, real scenarios, real decision-making under time pressure.

What the programme covers

  • SIEM operations: Detection rule writing, alert triage, false positive reduction in Splunk and Microsoft Sentinel

  • Threat hunting: Proactive hunting using MITRE ATT&CK, hypothesis-driven investigation

  • Incident response: From initial detection through containment, eradication, recovery, and post-incident review

  • Malware triage: Behavioural analysis, sandbox interpretation, indicator extraction

  • Threat intelligence: Consumption and operationalisation of CTI feeds within SOC workflows

  • SOC reporting: Communicating findings to stakeholders at L1, management, and executive level

How assessment works

Candidates complete a capstone scenario: a multi-stage simulated incident requiring detection, investigation, containment decision-making, and documented reporting. The capstone is reviewed by a senior Xcademia practitioner against defined competency criteria. There is no pass-or-fail threshold based on how many questions you answer correctly. The question is whether your work demonstrates the capability expected of a practitioner at the level you are claiming.

Every XSOC holder has a public record that any employer can check.

The XSOC capstone is the closest thing to a real SOC shift you will experience in a structured training environment. The analyst who completes it has produced evidence of capability, not evidence of recall.

The Cost Question

CySA+ is structured as an exam-based certification. The exam voucher costs $392 USD at time of publication. Realistic preparation for the exam, including study materials, practice tests, and a preparation course, typically adds $300 to $800 to that figure. Total investment for a first attempt with adequate preparation sits in the $700 to $1,200 range.

If you fail and retake, add another $392. If the certification expires before you apply your three-year renewal, add the renewal cost and CEU compliance overhead.

XSOC is priced at £5,995. That covers the full six-day programme, all materials, the practitioner assessment, the certification itself, and ongoing verifiability. There is no exam voucher, no renewal fee, no CEU requirement.

For professionals in the UAE, both certifications are accessible. CySA+ is available through CompTIA-authorised centres and online. XSOC is delivered by Xcademia's regional Dubai operation.

The cost comparison is not simply CySA+ exam fee vs XSOC programme fee. It is the full-cycle cost of each: preparation, examination, potential retake, renewal overhead, and the value of what you produce at the end. Measured on that basis, the gap narrows considerably.

Who Should Choose CySA+

CySA+ is the right choice if:

  • You are targeting roles in US-headquartered organisations where CompTIA certifications are specifically requested or required, including DoD-adjacent roles

  • You need a globally recognised credential that HR systems will pick up in keyword screening before a human reviews your application

  • You are early in your career and want to demonstrate foundational SOC knowledge before building toward more applied credentials

  • You are preparing for a role where CySA+ is listed as a minimum requirement and removing that barrier is the immediate priority

  • Your budget is constrained and the lower entry cost of an exam-only approach is a practical necessity right now

CySA+
Best for: global brand recognition and HR keyword screening

If you need a credential that passes CV screening tools and is named on job specifications globally, CySA+ serves that function. Pursue it as a door-opener, then build evidence of applied capability alongside it.

Who Should Choose XSOC

XSOC is the right choice if:

  • You are in or targeting a UK or UAE SOC environment where practitioner-assessed credentials are valued alongside or above exam-based certifications

  • You want to produce a verifiable evidence portfolio that demonstrates what you can do, not just what you know

  • You are making a career transition from IT or adjacent roles into SOC and need to demonstrate capability rapidly to a sceptical hiring manager

  • You are targeting L2 or L3 roles where the interview will require you to discuss real investigations, not just certification knowledge

  • You have already passed a foundational certification and are looking to add something that sets you apart from other CySA+ holders

XSOC
Best for: applied capability evidence and career differentiation

If you need to demonstrate what you can actually do in a SOC environment, XSOC provides the assessment framework and the verifiable evidence to prove it. Mentor-assessed. No MCQ. Verifiable at xcademia.com/verify.

The Combination That Makes Most Sense

The professionals who are best positioned in the 2026 SOC job market are not choosing between CySA+ and XSOC. They are sequencing them.

  • CySA+ first: Passes the keyword filter, gets you into interview rooms, signals foundational competence to HR

  • XSOC second: Demonstrates what CySA+ alone cannot, differentiates you from every other CySA+ holder in the same interview process

This combination tells a complete story. The market cert says you meet the baseline. The practitioner cert says you have gone beyond it. Together they answer both questions a hiring manager is asking: does this person know enough, and can they actually do the work?

The cert gets you in the room. The proof gets you the job. CySA+ opens the door. XSOC closes the offer.
